What’s the difference again between Full HD, 4K, 8K?
These are different resolutions and it makes sense to take a closer look when you’re filming a video. 📹
Resolution – Image Resolution?
Simply put, resolution measures how many pixels an image contains.
Pixel? That’s actually the short for “Picture Element”. It’s these small little dots that make up digital images. Each pixel corresponds to one colored dot.
So, image resolution = pixel length x pixel height = resolution.
Common resolution specs
- HD or HD-ready– 1280 x 720
- Full HD, also called 2K– 1920 x 1080
- 4K – 3840 x 2160
- 8K – 7680 x 4320
So The Bigger the better, right?
Yes. At the same time we often won’t see the difference, and the screen where you’ll view the video (whether it’s your phone, laptop, desktop) obviously also have a big impact.
The main advantage of filming a high definition is to be able to crop in the video. It’s almost like you’d have a second camera. So -> more dynamism.
We’re cropping in because the output resolution, especially on social media is usually lower. At the moment, the standard is still Full HD.
When we’re not zooming in the video, we simply reduce the size of the image to fit the output resolution. We call that “downscaling”. It should bring some more crispyness. However often not as much as expected.
